Community based Early literacy program in Uganda, Kasese

The Tangu Utoto Foundation Literacy and Early Learning Initiative is a community-based program designed to improve literacy, school readiness, and learning outcomes for children in underserved communities in Uganda. The initiative addresses limited access to age-appropriate reading materials, inadequate early learning opportunities, and low literacy levels among young children, particularly in rural areas. The primary objectives of the initiative are to: Strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy skills among children, Increase access to quality reading and learning resources, Support teachers and caregivers to promote effective early learning practices, Create sustainable community learning spaces that encourage a culture of reading. The initiative primarily targets children aged 3–12 years, including preschool and primary school learners, with a particular focus on vulnerable and disadvantaged children. Secondary beneficiaries include teachers, parents, caregivers, and community volunteers who play a critical role in supporting children's learning and development. The program operates through school-based literacy activities, mobile library outreach, teacher capacity building, reading clubs, and community library services. Notably, Tangu Utoto Foundation established the first community library in the district, providing children with regular access to books and learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Key outcomes have included increased access to reading materials, improved learner engagement in literacy activities, strengthened teacher capacity, and greater community participation in children's education. Schools supported by the initiative have reported improved reading habits and increased interest in learning among children. Several lessons have emerged from implementation. Community ownership is essential for sustainability, and engaging parents significantly improves children's learning outcomes. The initiative has also demonstrated that access to books alone is not enough; structured reading activities, teacher support, and regular follow-up are critical to achieving lasting literacy gains. These lessons continue to inform the Foundation's efforts to expand access to quality early childhood education and literacy opportunities for all children. Through this initiative, Tangu Utoto Foundation remains committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of their background or location, has access to quality early learning opportunities, develops strong literacy skills, and is empowered to reach their full potential
