The Echoes of the First Years

The Echoes of the First Years™ is TECEC’s integrated, community-driven early childhood development model designed to ensure that every child from conception through age eight has the opportunity to survive, thrive, and reach their full developmental potential. The model responds to the reality that early childhood outcomes are shaped by multiple interconnected factors, including quality learning opportunities, responsive caregiving, nutrition, family wellbeing, and safe environments.

Implemented in low-income communities across Mwanza and Mara regions of Tanzania, the model targets children aged 0–8 years, pregnant mothers, caregivers, adolescent and vulnerable parents, teachers, health workers, and community leaders. Through partnerships with government authorities, public schools, health facilities, and community structures, TECEC strengthens local systems to provide sustainable support for young children and families.

The model’s objectives are to improve children’s developmental outcomes, strengthen caregiver capacity, increase access to quality play-based early learning, improve child nutrition, and reduce barriers caused by household vulnerability. Key interventions include establishing community-based Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres within existing public and community spaces; creating Early Stimulation Corners in health facilities to support pregnant mothers and children during the critical first 1,000 days; and delivering weekly parenting sessions focused on early stimulation, nutrition, responsive caregiving, child mental wellbeing, and positive parenting.

To address the economic drivers affecting children’s development, TECEC supports vulnerable families, including adolescent and single parents, with livelihood skills such as nutrition-sensitive agribusiness, tailoring, and entrepreneurship. The model also operates a community-based maize fortification enterprise that improves access to affordable nutrient-rich flour while creating income opportunities and addressing hidden hunger among young children and pregnant women.

Since implementation, The Echoes of the First Years™ has reached more than 20,000 children and caregivers, contributing to improved literacy and numeracy, physical development, and social-emotional outcomes. The model has demonstrated that when families, communities, teachers, and local systems work together, children are better prepared for school and life.

Key lessons learned highlight the importance of starting early, empowering caregivers as children’s first teachers, integrating health, nutrition, education, and livelihoods, and ensuring community ownership for long-term sustainability. TECEC’s experience shows that investing in the early years is one of the most powerful pathways to building a healthier, more equitable future for Tanzania’s children.
