Supporting Children's Learning and Development From ECD to Primary School Through Sport
The initiative provides a continuous and practical support system for children as they progress through early childhood, enter primary school, and develop their abilities through learning, play, and sport. It is designed to respond to the different needs children experience at each stage while maintaining continuity in the support they receive.
At the early childhood level, the initiative provides children with opportunities to learn in a stimulating and child-friendly environment. Daily activities are organized around play, interaction, storytelling, songs, creative activities, reading, and age-appropriate learning experiences. These activities allow children to develop language, communication, creativity, social interaction, physical coordination, curiosity, and problem-solving abilities. Children are encouraged to participate actively rather than simply receive information, helping them develop confidence and a positive attitude toward learning.
The initiative currently reaches 51 children enrolled at URUHONGORE ECD Center, 35 children who have completed the ECD program and transitioned to primary school, and 74 children in primary schools. The primary-school support includes children who previously attended URUHONGORE as well as other children from low-income and vulnerable families. This continuity allows Bridge of Hope to remain connected with children after they leave the ECD environment and to respond to challenges that may emerge during their primary education.
For children in primary school, support is provided according to their circumstances and identified needs. This can include assistance with school feeding, scholastic materials, and other education-related requirements. The purpose is to help children participate more consistently in school and reduce practical challenges that can interfere with their education. Bridge of Hope works with schools and families to better understand children's circumstances and identify areas where additional support may be needed.
Sport provides another important space for children's development. Through the Rising Stars Sports Centre, children participate in football and related activities that combine physical exercise with opportunities for learning and personal growth. Training sessions encourage children to cooperate with others, follow rules, communicate, take responsibility, manage emotions, and respect teammates and opponents. Coaches and mentors use sport to reinforce positive behavior and create opportunities for children to develop their abilities in an enjoyable environment.
The initiative also extends learning beyond conventional classroom settings through the Play and Learn Initiative. Activities such as reading, storytelling, games, mentorship, and creative expression give children additional opportunities to practice what they learn, interact with peers, discover their interests, and express themselves.
A further strength of the initiative is the involvement of adults around the child. Parents, caregivers, teachers, coaches, and community members contribute to identifying children's needs and encouraging their continued participation. Their involvement helps create stronger links between children's learning at school, activities outside school, and the support they receive at home.
By connecting these different components, the initiative creates a child-centered pathway in which early learning, continued education support, play, mentorship, and sport reinforce one another. This enables Bridge of Hope to accompany children through important stages of their development while, creating opportunities for them to learn, participate, build relationships, and develop their potential.
