Early Childhood Development in Zimbabwe

Our organisation implements an institution-based early learning programme designed to support vulnerable children who are not yet accessing formal early childhood education. The programme focuses on providing structured, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences that prepare children for school readiness while also addressing their broader social and emotional needs.

In response to growing community needs, we are currently expanding our approach through the establishment of community-based play centres in informal settlement settings. These play centres specifically target vulnerable children under the age of five, particularly those who would otherwise have limited or no access to early learning opportunities. The aim is to bring early childhood development services closer to where children live, reducing barriers such as distance, cost, and lack of formal infrastructure.

Each play centre operates through a strong model of community ownership and participation. Venues are voluntarily provided by community members who offer safe spaces within their homes or community structures for learning activities to take place. This approach ensures sustainability and fosters a sense of shared responsibility for the wellbeing and development of young children within the community.

To ensure quality learning outcomes, we identify, train, and support para-professionals who facilitate daily lessons and structured play-based learning activities at each centre. These facilitators are equipped with basic early childhood development skills and are continuously mentored to improve their practice and responsiveness to children’s needs.

Parental involvement is also a key component of the model. Parents actively participate in the programme by taking turns to prepare meals for the children, ensuring that learners receive basic nutrition during the day. This shared responsibility not only supports the children’s wellbeing but also strengthens community engagement, trust, and ownership of the programme.

Through this integrated approach, the programme seeks to create safe, inclusive, and stimulating early learning environments that promote holistic child development and strengthen community resilience.
