Community-Led Integrated Early Childhood Development and Foundation Learning Initiatives

This initiative , implemented by Community Action for Health and Development (CAHED), is designed to improve early childhood development (ECD) and foundational learning outcomes through a holistic , community -driven approach. It recognizes that children's ability to learn is closely linked to their health , nutrition, protection and home environment , and therefore integrates these elements into a single , coordinated model.

Objective The initiative aims to:

  1. Improve school readiness and foundational literacy and numeracy among children aged 0-8 years.
  2. Strengthen community health and nutrition systems that directly impact early childhood development.
  3. Promote inclusive education practices , particularly for children with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
  4. Empower caregivers and communities with knowledge and tools to support early learning at home.

Target Beneficiaries The primary beneficiaries are children aged 0-8 years from underserved and marginalized communities, including children with disabilities. Secondary beneficiaries include parents, caregivers , community health volunteers (CHVs), early childhood educators , and local institutions that support child development.

Geographic Scope
The initiative is currently implemented in Homabay County , Kenya, with a focus on rural and hard-to -reach communities where access to quality early childhood services remains limited.

Approach and Key Activities The program adopts a community-led mode by working closely with CHVs, local schools, and community structures. Key activities include caregiver training on responsive parenting and early stimulation , integration of nutrition and health screening into ECD services. Strengthening referral systems for children with developmental delays , and supporting methods. The initiative also leverages partnerships with local government and institutions to ensure sustainability.

Outcomes and Impact The initiative has contributed to improved caregiver engagement in children's learning , increased access to early screening and intervention services and enhanced foundational learning outcomes among participating children. Communities have reported greater awareness of the importance of childhood development and local systems are becoming more responsive to children's diverse needs .

Lessons Learned Key lessons include the importance of integrating health and education interventions for greater impact , the effectiveness of community health volunteers as agents of change, and the need for culturally relevant , locally owned solutions. Practically , sustained engagement with caregivers and local stakeholders is critical to achieving long-term improvements in early childhood development and foundational learning.
