Integrated Early Childhood Development and Parenting Support Programme in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement

The Integrated Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Parenting Support Program implemented by RESDA AFRICA aims to provide young children aged 0–8 years with a strong foundation for lifelong learning, wellbeing, and development. The initiative was established in response to the limited access to quality early childhood services among refugee and host community families in the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, where many children face challenges related to poverty, malnutrition, inadequate learning opportunities, displacement-related trauma, and limited parental support.

The program adopts a holistic approach that integrates early learning, nutrition, health awareness, child protection, psychosocial support, and positive parenting practices. Through community-based ECD centers and outreach activities, children participate in play-based learning sessions designed to enhance cognitive, social, emotional, language, and physical development. Locally made educational and play materials are utilized to create stimulating learning environments that encourage creativity and active participation.

Recognizing the critical role parents and caregivers play in child development, the initiative provides parenting education sessions that equip caregivers with knowledge and practical skills on responsive caregiving, early stimulation, nutrition, hygiene, child protection, and positive discipline. These sessions strengthen family capacity to support children's growth and development both at home and within the community.

The program also promotes child nutrition through awareness campaigns, kitchen gardening, and demonstrations on preparing nutritious meals using locally available foods. Caregivers are encouraged to adopt healthy feeding practices to improve children's nutritional outcomes and overall wellbeing.

In collaboration with community leaders, schools, and humanitarian partners, RESDA AFRICA trains community volunteers and ECD facilitators to deliver quality services and ensure sustainability. The initiative actively engages youth and women as educators, mentors, and community mobilizers, creating opportunities for local leadership and livelihood development.

Since its implementation, the program has reached hundreds of refugee and host community families, improving school readiness, increasing parental engagement in child development, strengthening child protection mechanisms, and fostering social cohesion between diverse communities. By investing in the early years of a child's life, RESDA AFRICA contributes to building resilient families and creating opportunities for children to thrive despite the challenges of displacement.

The initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), ensuring that vulnerable children have equitable access to quality early childhood development opportunities.
