Improving Foundational Literacy Through Joyful Child-Centered Learning

Watoto Wasome is a Kenyan-based literacy initiative dedicated to ensuring that every child, regardless of circumstance, develops the foundational literacy skills needed to thrive in school and in life. Founded in 2019 by educators who volunteered in Kibera and witnessed firsthand the depth of the literacy crisis, the initiative responds to a learning emergency affecting millions of children in underserved communities – particularly those in rescue centers, children's homes, and informal settlements where access to quality literacy instruction and learning materials remains severely limited.

Our approach is grounded in a simple but evidence-backed belief: 𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙣 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙟𝙤𝙮𝙛𝙪𝙡, 𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨. Through play-based learning, structured phonics instruction and age-appropriate and culturally relevant storybooks, we help children build essential skills of letter-sound recognition, blending, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, while developing a love for reading that outlasts any single program.

𝗢𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 1. Improve foundational literacy outcomes among children aged 3–10 years. 2. Strengthen educators' capacity to deliver effective, child-centered literacy instruction that they can sustain independently. 3. Increase access to quality storybooks and literacy materials in communities where children have rarely or never owned a book. 4. Promote joyful reading attitudes alongside measurable literacy skills. 5. Develop scalable, low-cost approaches to literacy improvement that can be adapted across diverse community contexts.

𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 Our primary beneficiaries are children aged 3–10 years who are below their expected reading level or at risk of staying behind, particularly in rescue centers, children's homes, and low-income communities. We work directly with teachers, volunteers and caregivers, recognizing that sustained literacy improvement depends on the adults closest to children, not only on direct program delivery.

𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 Watoto Wasome currently operates in Nairobi, Kenya, with programs implemented across children's homes, rescue centres, and community schools. We are actively expanding our educator support model through partnerships with schools and community organizations, with a long-term vision of reaching children across Kenya and contributing to continental foundational literacy goals.

𝙆𝙚𝙮 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 • Child-centered literacy sessions that make reading accessible, engaging, and fun. • Educator and volunteer training and ongoing mentorship in foundational literacy instruction. • Pre- and post-literacy assessments to identify individual learning needs and track progress. • Provision of storybooks and low-cost learning materials to children and learning environments. • Classroom coaching and continuous support for educators beyond initial training.

𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 Since 2019, Watoto Wasome has supported over 2000 children and trained more than 80 teachers and volunteers across Nairobi. Children in our programs have demonstrated literacy improvements of up to 60%+, alongside measurable gains in reading confidence and attitude toward learning. Teachers and volunteers report stronger instructional practices and greater ability to identify and support struggling readers - creating impact that continues well beyond our direct presence.

Beyond the numbers, we have placed over 360 storybooks in the hands of children who had never owned one - a small act with outsized significance for children who have grown up without books in their homes or schools.

𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 Our experience has shown that sustainable literacy improvement requires both direct support for children and continuous support for educators. We have learned that investing in teacher capacity creates long-term impact, as trained educators continue applying effective literacy practices long after direct project support ends. We have also seen the importance of using low-cost, locally relevant materials, fostering joyful and safe learning environments, and building strong partnerships with communities to ensure community adoption and long-term use.

Through this work, Watoto Wasome continues to contribute to efforts to improve foundational literacy in Kenya, one letter-sound at a time.
