"Bright Beginnings" – Early Childhood Development Initiative, Addis Ababa (2025–2027)
Implemented by HOPE worldwide Ethiopia, this three-year project targets 600 direct beneficiaries (children aged 4–6) and 600 indirect beneficiaries (caregivers, teachers, and community members) in underserved areas of Addis Ababa.
Project Objectives
The initiative has four specific objectives: improve access to quality early learning opportunities; create safe, nurturing environments supporting children's emotional well-being while empowering women toward self-sufficiency; build capacity of caregivers, teachers, and community members to sustain ECD programs; and engage vulnerable communities through educational support, mentorship, and volunteer programs.
Key Activities Across All Schools
Activities include classroom and play area renovations, distribution of learning materials, teacher training, psychosocial support services, caregiver workshops (Learning Through Play), women's empowerment programs, establishment of ECD committees, community outreach events, and educational support for vulnerable 12th-grade students.
Lessons from the First School
Several critical lessons emerged from the first school, Atse Fasil Preprimary School. Phased renovations during school terms require close coordination with administrators; scheduling intrusive work during school breaks proved essential. Caregiver participation increased significantly when workshops were offered at flexible times accommodating working parents. Establishing the ECD Committee early greatly enhanced community ownership, with members proactively monitoring renovations and mobilizing local resources. Pre- and post-training assessments revealed teachers need ongoing refresher sessions rather than one-time training, leading to follow-up visits now being conducted at Kebebe Tsehaye. Psychosocial support services demonstrated measurable reductions in child emotional distress, validating trauma-informed approaches which are particularly relevant for the orphanage context.
Current Status: Kebebe Tsehaye Preprimary School
The project is currently in its second year (2026) operating at Kebebe Tsehaye Preprimary School in Gulele Sub City, Woreda 4. This school uniquely houses an orphanage on its premises, caring for vulnerable children without parental support. In response to this context, the project has expanded its original scope to include specialized training for orphanage nannies alongside the regular caregiver workshops. Baseline assessments at Kebebe Tsehaye have been completed, revealing specific needs related to trauma-informed care for orphaned children. Classroom renovations are underway using a phased approach to minimize disruption. Teacher training sessions have been conducted, with a focus on psychosocial support techniques. The women's empowerment program has been launched for caregivers associated with the school, and an ECD Committee is being established with representation from teachers, caregivers, nannies, and local leaders. A community outreach event is planned for the coming months.
Expected Outcomes
Expected outcomes include improved early learning outcomes, increased enrollment, enhanced caregiver and teacher skills, safer learning environments, sustainable community engagement, better school readiness for primary education, established support networks for emotional well-being, and long-term positive impacts on children and caregivers.
Sustainability and Management
Sustainability strategies integrate ECD programs into school operations and local ECD committees. Staffing includes a Project Manager, Executive Director, Community Coordinator Counselor, Program Accountant, Administrator/Treasurer, and two Community Workers. Monitoring and evaluation use baseline and end-line assessments, surveys, focus group discussions, and quarterly progress reports.
