Curriculum Development and Practitioner/Principals Training

The Knysna Education Trust (KET) Curriculum & Pedagogy Initiative is a comprehensive early childhood development programme designed to improve school readiness outcomes for children aged 0–6 years across the greater Knysna area. The initiative supports early learning programmes through curriculum development, practitioner training, principal mentoring, resource provision, learner assessment, and ongoing coaching.

The programme serves practitioners, principals, children, and families in both urban and under-resourced communities. A key focus is ensuring that every child has access to high-quality early learning experiences that support their cognitive, language, physical, social, and emotional development.

As part of this initiative, a structured curriculum has been developed that integrates literacy, numeracy, perceptual development, gross and fine motor development, and social-emotional learning. The curriculum is supported by detailed lesson plans, teacher guides, classroom resources, and parent engagement activities. A unique feature of the programme is its 20-theme Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) framework, which intentionally develops skills such as adaptability, empathy, resilience, communication, responsibility, cooperation, self-regulation, and gratitude alongside academic readiness.

The initiative includes regular practitioner development workshops, onsite coaching visits, principal leadership support, and professional mentoring. Practitioners receive ongoing guidance in curriculum implementation, classroom management, inclusive education, assessment practices, and effective teaching methodologies. Principals are supported in areas such as leadership, governance, sustainability, business management, and quality improvement.

Learner progress is monitored through tools such as OPTIMA and ELOM assessments, enabling data-informed intervention planning and early identification of developmental challenges. Assessment results are shared with practitioners and parents to strengthen support for each child both at school and at home.

The initiative currently supports dozens of early learning programmes and hundreds of children across Knysna, Sedgefield, Hornlee, Khayalethu, White Location, and surrounding communities. Through a combination of capacity building, coaching, assessment, and resource support, the programme aims to strengthen teaching quality, improve school readiness outcomes, and ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

Ultimately, the initiative seeks to create confident practitioners, well-managed learning environments, engaged families, and children who are socially, emotionally, and academically prepared for success in formal schooling and beyond.
