An Exploratory Study of Early Letter-Sound Knowledge in a Low Socio-Economic Context in South Africa

This study examines early literacy development among children from disadvantaged communities in South Africa, focusing on Grade 1 letter-sound knowledge and the impact of a Grade R intervention. Findings highlight the critical role of letter knowledge in foundational reading and the need for improved teacher training in emergent literacy.
